Charlie Phillips has marked his 16th birthday with a run of opportunities for Arsenal and England, gaining first-team matchday experience before making two debuts.
The goalkeeper started England under-17s’ 5-1 victory over the Republic of Ireland on 23 September. England’s official match report confirms his place in the starting XI.
That appearance followed involvement with Arsenal’s senior squad and a winning introduction to under-18 football.
Charlie Phillips earns Arsenal opportunities above his age group
Academy reporter Jeorge Bird reports for Arseblog that Phillips travelled as Arsenal’s third-choice goalkeeper for the Carabao Cup tie at Ipswich on 15 September.
Bird describes him as the first under-16 goalkeeper selected by the club for that matchday role. It provided experience around the senior team, rather than a competitive first-team appearance.
Four days later, Phillips made his Arsenal under-18 debut in a 5-1 win against Norwich on his 16th birthday. His England under-17 debut followed on 23 September.
The sequence adds another name to follow in our Arsenal academy coverage, alongside the young outfield players attracting attention.
Scholarship decision is still ahead
Phillips remains an under-16 player this season. Bird reports that he would join next season’s scholarship intake if he stays at Arsenal.
That makes regular opportunities in youth football the next step to watch. His September involvement shows progress through the age groups, but does not establish a permanent position in the senior goalkeeping order.
For now, Phillips has gained three different experiences in eight days: a senior matchday, under-18 football and an England under-17 start.
