Arsenal goalkeeper Illan Meslier has emerged as a late transfer target for Marseille, just weeks after completing his move to the Emirates Stadium.
The 26-year-old joined Arsenal on a free transfer following his departure from Leeds United earlier this summer.
However, the Frenchman could already be offered a route back to Ligue 1 before the transfer window closes.
Marseille target Arsenal goalkeeper Illan Meslier
Foot Mercato reports that Meslier has become one of Marseille’s leading options as they search for another goalkeeper.
The French club are said to be particularly interested in the former Leeds goalkeeper’s profile after Geronimo Rulli departed for Manchester City.
There is an important obstacle before any potential move can progress.
Marseille reportedly need to reduce their squad and wage bill before they are in a position to make a concrete offer for Meslier.
That means there is no Arsenal-Marseille agreement or formal offer at this stage.
Meslier only completed his move to Arsenal earlier this summer after ending his seven-year spell with Leeds.
He arrived to add further depth to Mikel Arteta’s goalkeeping options alongside David Raya and Kepa Arrizabalaga.
A departure so soon after arriving would therefore represent a surprising development.
Marseille’s interest is nevertheless worth monitoring during the closing days of the window, particularly if the Ligue 1 side create enough room in their squad to make an approach.
