Arsenal manager Renée Slegers missed her post-match press conference after the 2-2 draw with Paris FC because she was too angry to undertake media duties, according to reporting from the ground.
Arseblog’s Tim Stillman, who attended the match, reports that assistant Aaron D’Antino stepped in after Arsenal surrendered a two-goal lead.
Alessia Russo and Georgia Stanway had put the visitors in control before Clara Mateo reduced the deficit. Maeline Mendy then equalised from the penalty spot following Leah Williamson’s handball.
Our explanation of the Williamson penalty incident examines the restart at the centre of that controversy.
Renee Slegers retains reported internal support
Stillman also reports a conversation with Arsenal’s Jodie Taylor before the decision over Slegers’ media duties.
Taylor described strong support for the head coach internally and a belief among the players that they were close to emerging from their difficult spell.
That is an important part of the picture. Slegers’ absence from the press conference should not be presented as evidence of a decision over her future.
Arsenal need a response on the pitch
The frustration followed a match in which Arsenal found the goals they had been seeking but failed to protect their advantage.
As our analysis of Arsenal’s game management in Paris explored, scoring twice addressed only part of the challenge.
Turning promising spells into complete performances remains the task. Internal backing offers Slegers support, but Arsenal still need results to reflect that belief.
