Arsenal suffer Mariona Caldentey injury blow as hamstring problem forces Spain withdrawal

Arsenal have suffered another fitness setback after Mariona Caldentey withdrew from Spain’s squad with a hamstring problem following Sunday’s defeat at Manchester City.

According to Tom Garry, the midfielder will miss Spain’s upcoming games against the USA, with Liverpool’s Natalia Ramos receiving her first senior call-up in her place.

Spanish outlet AS also reports Caldentey’s withdrawal from the squad for the two friendlies.

Mariona Caldentey withdraws after early Arsenal exit

Caldentey started at the Etihad after Renée Slegers retained the same ten outfield players who faced Paris FC.

However, Caitlin Foord replaced her before half-time as Arsenal went on to lose 4-2 despite twice taking the lead.

The international withdrawal adds to a difficult evening for Slegers, whose side remain on five points from their opening five WSL matches.

It also interrupts Caldentey’s schedule at a time when Arsenal need consistency as they attempt to recover from their disappointing start.

Arsenal await clarity over recovery

The update does not provide a recovery timescale or establish whether Caldentey will miss Arsenal’s next match.

Her withdrawal confirms she will not take part in Spain’s upcoming fixtures, but the extent of the problem remains unclear.

Foord provided the immediate replacement against City. Any longer-term selection decision will depend on Caldentey’s assessment and progress.

Having already surrendered a winning position in Paris before Sunday’s defeat, Arsenal now face an additional fitness concern as Slegers looks for a response.
