Arsenal boss Renee Slegers faces mounting pressure as Man City defeat deepens crisis

Could Arsenal sack Renée Slegers? After a 4-2 defeat at Manchester City left the Gunners with five points from five league matches, it is a legitimate question to examine.

The results warrant scrutiny. However, the available reporting does not establish that Arsenal are preparing to dismiss their head coach.

Before Sunday’s game, Slegers said she felt supported by the club’s hierarchy. The question now is how convincingly she can justify that backing after another damaging afternoon.

Arsenal’s results make the scrutiny unavoidable

Arsenal sit 10 points behind City after twice leading at the Etihad. Across all competitions, they have won once in their last six matches.

The concern stretches beyond defeats against Chelsea and City. Arsenal also dropped points at home to Crystal Palace and Manchester United, leaving little room for setbacks against their strongest opponents.

That sequence has returned two points from a possible 12.

For a team with ambitions of challenging for the title, it represents a substantial failure to meet expectations. Competitive spells within those games cannot compensate indefinitely for the points missing from the table.

The City defeat changes the argument

Arsenal’s early attacking problems offered one explanation for their disappointing start. Sunday posed a different question.

Lisa Baum and Alessia Russo supplied two goals against the league leaders. Arsenal had winning positions to defend and still left empty-handed.

That follows the two-goal advantage surrendered against Paris FC. The incidents were different, but both matches ended with Arsenal losing control of a favourable scoreline.

Slegers must address how her team manages those situations. Selection, substitutions and collective organisation all belong in that assessment.

She retained all ten outfield starters from Paris. Continuity was a defensible choice, but another setback strengthens the case for reconsidering which combinations can deliver a complete performance.

What has been said about Slegers’ position?

Asked before the City match whether she felt the board’s full support, Slegers told reporters:

“Yes, that’s what I felt. That’s been positive and that’s helped me.”

The Guardian reported those comments on Friday.

That is meaningful evidence of her position before this defeat. It is not a guarantee about what happens next, nor should it be presented as a fresh statement from the board after Sunday’s result.

Arsenal also extended her contract until 2029 in January, having seen her lead the club to the 2025 Champions League title.

That achievement gives the argument for patience substance. Slegers has already demonstrated that she can prepare this team to beat elite opposition.

Should Arsenal make a change?

Our view is that an immediate dismissal would be premature on the evidence available. The club should nevertheless demand a clear recovery plan.

The assessment should include whether players understand their responsibilities, whether selection changes improve performances and whether Arsenal can protect leads without losing their attacking threat.

There is no need to invent a dressing-room revolt or an ultimatum to recognise the seriousness of the situation.

Past success deserves weight, but current results must carry weight too. Arsenal should give Slegers the opportunity to produce a response while judging that response against clear competitive standards.

She has earned patience. The next phase must show why that patience remains the right decision.
