Arsenal boss Slegers delivers blunt title verdict as Man City defeat prompts major review

Renée Slegers says Arsenal are outside the WSL title conversation as she prepares a review of their disappointing start during the international break.

Sunday’s 4-2 defeat at Manchester City left the Gunners 10 points behind the leaders after five league matches, despite twice holding the lead at the Etihad.

Asked about Arsenal’s title prospects, Slegers told Sky Sports:

“At the moment we’re not in the (title) conversation, no.”

What will Arsenal review?

Slegers indicated that the assessment would extend beyond matchday performances to include the training programme and work behind the scenes.

In her post-match press conference, transcribed by Arseblog News, she said:

“There will be a big review of our season so far.”

She also acknowledged that Arsenal’s substitutes had not produced the same impact as previously, contrasting that with the immediate effect of City’s changes.

Kerstin Casparij came off the bench to equalise before the hosts completed their comeback, as detailed in our Manchester City against Arsenal match report.

Slegers addresses her Arsenal future

Questions about her position followed another damaging result. Slegers said she still had energy for the job and described support and agreement over the direction within the club in the days before the match.

Her comments outline a review of Arsenal’s football operation. They do not announce a board decision over her future.

For supporters, the next test is what changes follow. After the lost advantage against Paris FC and Sunday’s defeat, Arsenal need their assessment to produce improvements in protecting leads and turning competitive performances into victories.
