Alessia Russo Faces Chelsea Test After Goalless Arsenal WSL Start

Alessia Russo heads into Arsenal Women’s showdown with Chelsea still searching for her first Women’s Super League goal of the season.

The England striker has started all three league matches and completed 263 minutes without a goal or assist, according to Opta’s current Alessia Russo data.

That record reflects Arsenal’s wider attacking frustration rather than a lack of involvement from Russo.

Read Arsenal previously highlighted how she attempted seven shots without scoring during the goalless draw with Crystal Palace.

Chelsea offer Russo chance to respond

Sunday’s trip to Stamford Bridge provides a major opportunity to change that.

Russo has recent pedigree against Chelsea. The Blues’ official match preview recalls her equaliser in last season’s 1-1 WSL meeting at the Emirates.

She also scored during Arsenal’s 3-1 Champions League quarter-final victory over Chelsea in March.

Renée Slegers is expected to return Russo to a conventional centre-forward role, with our Arsenal Women predicted XI against Chelsea placing her ahead of Mariona Caldentey.

Arsenal need greater efficiency.

They scored only twice across their opening three league matches, an issue covered in our three problems Arsenal must solve before Chelsea.

A Russo goal at Stamford Bridge would be a timely way to begin fixing the biggest one.
