Smilla Holmberg 94th-minute heroics preserve Arsenal’s 20-game WSL record

Smilla Holmberg rescued Arsenal Women in dramatic fashion against Manchester United and extended the club’s Women’s Super League unbeaten record in the process.

Arsenal were seconds away from defeat at Emirates Stadium after Julia Zigiotti Olme punished a defensive error to put United ahead.

Holmberg changed that in stoppage time.

Leah Williamson lifted a delivery towards the far post and the substitute converted to secure a 1-1 draw. Reuters confirmed Holmberg’s late goal denied United their first WSL win of the season.

Holmberg preserves Arsenal record

The equaliser carried added significance.

Opta confirmed Arsenal entered the game unbeaten in 19 consecutive WSL matches, equalling the longest run in the club’s history. Avoiding defeat against United therefore extended that sequence to a new club-record 20 games.

Holmberg also made an immediate impact after coming off the bench.

Her direct running gave Arsenal greater urgency before she eventually delivered the decisive moment.

We rated Holmberg 8.5/10 in our Arsenal Women player ratings against Manchester United.

The late rescue should not completely disguise another frustrating attacking display, though.

Arsenal have now drawn successive WSL matches after last weekend’s 0-0 stalemate with Crystal Palace.

Our Arsenal 1-1 Manchester United match report detailed how close Slegers’ side came to losing their unbeaten run.

Holmberg ensured the record survived.
