Arsenal star Zubimendi makes frank Spain admission as Rodri stands in his way

Arsenal midfielder Martin Zubimendi has admitted accepting a supporting role for Spain is difficult, while acknowledging the quality of the player standing ahead of him.

Speaking to TVE in an interview published on Thursday, Zubimendi explained the challenge of competing with Rodri.

“I’m in the best national team in the world, with the best holding midfielder in the world ahead of me,” he said, translated from Spanish.

He also indicated that Luis de la Fuente’s confidence in him had remained intact despite his reduced involvement at Arsenal.

Martin Zubimendi gets Spain opportunity

Zubimendi returned to the starting line-up for Tuesday’s 4-1 victory over Croatia, taking Rodri’s place as Spain continued their winning start to the Nations League.

Spain face Czechia on Saturday evening, with kick-off at 7.45pm BST.

That provides another selection decision for De la Fuente before Zubimendi turns his attention back to club football.

Arsenal’s October schedule could bring opportunities

Read Arsenal previously reported that Arsenal rejected Chelsea’s deadline-day approach for Zubimendi, keeping the midfielder in Mikel Arteta’s squad following Bruno Guimaraes’ arrival.

Our view is that competitive minutes during this break could prove useful when Arsenal’s fixtures resume. A player outside the regular league XI still needs match sharpness when his next opportunity arrives.

Arsenal’s upcoming schedule starts with Leeds United visiting on 10 October, followed by Lille in the Champions League three days later.

With domestic and European commitments returning together, Arteta will need alternatives ready to contribute. Zubimendi’s international involvement offers a chance to stay prepared.
