Tony Bloom Hails Victory Over Arsenal in Record-Breaking Spell
Brighton chairman Tony Bloom has described the club’s 3-0 win over Arsenal on 19 September as part of the best spell in the club’s entire history. He gave the assessment in an interview with BBC South East, days after Tony Bloom watched Brighton beat Arsenal at the Amex during the club’s 125th anniversary celebrations.
The result, alongside wins over Manchester United and Coventry City, has helped lift Brighton to third in the Premier League table. Bloom cited the Carabao Cup win over Manchester United and a 5-0 league win over Coventry City as further evidence of a genuine step forward for the club.
Brighton Chairman Outlines Historical Success in BBC Interview
Bloom used the same BBC South East interview to put Brighton’s remarkable few weeks into full context. He said the run of results was the “best in the history of the football club.”
This was a striking claim given everything the Seagulls have achieved since he took charge. Bloom became Brighton’s majority shareholder in 2009, when the club were playing in the third tier at a temporary ground rather than the Amex.
Despite the scale of the achievement, he was careful not to dwell on it. “It’s vital that we always look forward. There’s no point in looking back,” Bloom said.
He added that Brighton must keep evolving to stay ahead of their rivals. He explained the thinking behind that approach: “We’re always looking to improve in everything we do in terms of performances. In terms of results, processes, and innovative ways of doing things. Our competition is doing the same. If you stand still, you go backwards.” Bloom said the club would mark the occasion before returning to work.
“So we enjoy the moments and then move on because we have to keep improving,” he said.
Emirates Defeat Reflects Brighton’s Surge to Third Position
Brighton’s win over Arsenal at the Amex followed a remarkable comeback three days earlier. The Seagulls had fought back from 2-0 down to beat Manchester United in the Carabao Cup at Old Trafford. That double result lifted Brighton to third in the Premier League, their best position in years. Our earlier coverage carried the confirmed team news at the Amex before kick-off.
Bloom stopped short of predicting a title challenge, but he did not rule out silverware this season. “Obviously, winning leagues and winning trophies is really difficult. I do think we’ve got a real chance,” he said.
He also assessed Brighton’s prospects in Europe, comparing the Conference League favourably with tougher competitions the club have entered before. “The Conference League is a very winnable tournament compared to others we’ve played in,” Bloom said. Crystal Palace won that same competition last season. A reminder of what is achievable in the Conference League.
Tony Bloom believes Brighton can build on the Arsenal win as the season goes on, rather than treat it as a peak to be remembered fondly. Arsenal’s European fixtures this month follow soon after the Brighton defeat, adding to a busy period for Mikel Arteta’s squad.
Upcoming Schedule and Long-Term Stadium Plans Revealed
Bloom also used the same interview to confirm Brighton’s plans for a new home for the women’s team. The club intend to build an £80m stadium next to the Amex, in what would be one of Europe’s first purpose-built grounds for a women’s side, with a target opening date of 2030.
Bloom said he was “really excited” about the project. “Having a stadium right next to the Amex is perfect for us,” he said. “I’m really looking forward to 2030, when hopefully the players will be walking out at our new stadium,” he added. For now, his attention stays on sustaining Brighton’s push up the Premier League table this season.
