Chloe Kelly has lost her England place after Sarina Wiegman said recent performances had fallen below her expectations.
The Arsenal winger misses the squad for October’s World Cup qualifying play-off against Greece, with Manchester United’s Ella Toone also omitted.
Explaining the decision, Wiegman told reporters, as quoted by The Guardian: “The main reason is that I think the levels weren’t what I expect from them on the pitch.”
Chloe Kelly England omission raises stakes at Arsenal
Kelly’s international record makes this a significant call.
As her official England profile records, she scored the winner against Germany in the Euro 2022 final and converted the decisive penalty against Spain when England retained the trophy in 2025.
She also helped Arsenal win the Champions League after returning to the club on loan that year.
Those achievements underline how much she has contributed. They also make her absence from this squad particularly striking.
The decision comes during a difficult attacking spell for Arsenal. Renée Slegers’ side have scored twice across their opening four WSL matches, taking five points from 12.

Kelly now has an additional reason to turn club opportunities into decisive contributions. Wiegman’s selection puts the focus firmly on what she produces next.
