Thomas Tuchel has praised Arsenal youngster Myles Lewis-Skelly after handing him an England start against Spain on his 20th birthday.
Lewis-Skelly played 70 minutes in central midfield during Saturday’s 3-2 Nations League defeat at Wembley before being replaced by James Garner.
Read Arsenal covered the youngster’s England midfield opportunity ahead of the game, and Tuchel has now explained why he trusted him in the role.
Speaking in his post-match media duties, Tuchel said: “He did very well for Arsenal in this position. I think it suits him a bit better than left-back.”
Tuchel impressed by Lewis-Skelly display
The England boss insisted Lewis-Skelly’s birthday had nothing to do with his selection before delivering a positive verdict on his performance.
Tuchel added: “He was just very good and had a good match today. So well done. Did everything that was needed. Good performance.”
It represents another significant step for Lewis-Skelly after returning to the senior England set-up.
Tuchel had already highlighted his Arsenal progress when announcing the squad, noting that the Hale End graduate had finished last season strongly and was competing in a demanding club environment, as detailed by England Football.
Lewis-Skelly’s ability to operate centrally as well as at left-back gives both Arsenal and England another option, and Tuchel’s comments suggest his latest international opportunity has strengthened his case for further minutes.
