Lee Carsley makes ‘inevitable’ Max Dowman prediction after Arsenal rise

Lee Carsley believes Max Dowman’s promotion through the England setup is “inevitable” after the Arsenal teenager’s remarkable rise.

The 16-year-old remains with England Under-19s during the current international break despite already establishing himself around Mikel Arteta’s senior squad.

Dowman has also been discussed as a possible option to train with Thomas Tuchel’s senior England group following several withdrawals.

Carsley has now explained why England are resisting the temptation to accelerate his development too quickly.

Lee Carsley makes Max Dowman prediction

Carsley described Dowman as an outstanding talent and said his eventual progression into the Under-21 squad is inevitable.

“He’s definitely an outstanding talent,” Carsley said in comments reported by BBC Sport via Yahoo Sports.

The England Under-21 manager confirmed that Dowman’s name regularly comes up during conversations with Tuchel over squad selection.

However, Carsley wants any promotion to come when Dowman can play meaningful minutes rather than simply moving age groups because of the attention surrounding him.

That stance is particularly interesting after Dowman was already considered for an opportunity to train with England’s senior squad during this international window.

For now, England have kept him with the Under-19s.

England point to Ethan Nwaneri example

Carsley also compared the situation with Arsenal teammate Ethan Nwaneri, whose international progression was deliberately managed despite breaking into senior club football at a very young age.

England’s concern is therefore not Dowman’s ability.

It is ensuring each promotion serves his long-term development.

That caution comes despite the teenager’s increasingly influential Arsenal performances.

Dowman produced one of his strongest senior displays yet when he scored twice in Arsenal’s 4-2 Carabao Cup victory over Ipswich Town.

His progress has also earned glowing reviews inside Arsenal’s dressing room, with Bukayo Saka describing Dowman’s talent as “insane” while challenging him to determine how far his career can go.

Carsley’s message follows a similar theme.

England clearly view Dowman as a player capable of progressing rapidly through the pathway, but there is no desire to promote him simply to satisfy the growing excitement around his performances.

For Arsenal, that measured approach should align with Arteta’s own handling of one of Hale End’s brightest prospects.

Dowman’s next international step appears increasingly certain.

The only question is when England decide the moment is right.
