Ethan Nwaneri’s loan move to Borussia Dortmund was designed to give one of Arsenal’s brightest young players something that had become difficult to guarantee at the Emirates Stadium: regular senior football.
Three weeks into the move, that objective is already being achieved.
Nwaneri has accumulated 185 Bundesliga minutes across three appearances, starting Dortmund’s last two league matches against Paderborn and Stuttgart after making his debut from the bench against Hoffenheim.
He is still waiting for his first official Dortmund goal or assist, but the early numbers reveal a player who has moved quickly from deadline-day addition to a genuine option for Niko Kovač.
That builds on what we identified in our initial analysis of why Nwaneri’s Borussia Dortmund loan was already making sense for Arsenal.
Ethan Nwaneri already has 185 Bundesliga minutes
The raw playing-time figures are perhaps the most important numbers from an Arsenal perspective.
Nwaneri has played in all three Bundesliga matches available to him since joining Dortmund.
His league involvement so far reads:
| Opponent | Minutes | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Hoffenheim | 58 | 3-2 win |
| Paderborn | 65 | 3-0 win |
| Stuttgart | 62 | 1-0 win |
| Total | 185 | Three wins |
His debut against Hoffenheim was particularly encouraging.
Nwaneri was introduced after 32 minutes following an injury to Filippo Mané and remained on the pitch for the rest of Dortmund’s comeback.
The official Borussia Dortmund match report recorded Nwaneri’s involvement in the decisive moment.
After Dortmund fought back from 2-0 down, the Arsenal loanee delivered the late ball that was eventually turned into his own net by Albian Hajdari for the 87th-minute winner.
It did not go down as a conventional assist, but it was an immediate example of Nwaneri affecting a Bundesliga match.
Paderborn performance showed Nwaneri’s attacking potential
His most eye-catching individual performance followed against Paderborn.
Kovač handed Nwaneri his first Bundesliga start and the teenager completed 65 minutes of Dortmund’s 3-0 victory.
He earned a 7.7 FotMob rating, comfortably his strongest league rating since arriving in Germany.
The Bundesliga’s official report confirmed Nwaneri was one of four players introduced into Dortmund’s starting XI as Kovač rotated his side following their Champions League fixture.
The significance for Arsenal was not merely the performance.
Nwaneri had gone from deadline-day arrival to starting for one of Germany’s biggest clubs within 11 days.
He retained his place the following weekend.
Nwaneri earns second successive Dortmund start
Nwaneri started again as Dortmund beat Stuttgart 1-0 before the international break.
He played 62 minutes as Maximilian Beier’s second-half goal secured another victory and moved Dortmund to the top of the Bundesliga.
It was not Nwaneri’s most influential attacking display, and Read Arsenal previously examined the mixed German reaction to his performance against Stuttgart.
Yet that game arguably provides another encouraging number.
Two consecutive Bundesliga starts.
For a 19-year-old who was struggling to see a clear route to regular Arsenal minutes, that matters.
Champions League minutes strengthen Nwaneri’s start
Nwaneri’s Dortmund experience is not restricted to domestic football either.
He also played 55 minutes in Dortmund’s 3-2 Champions League victory over Villarreal, taking his competitive playing time for the German club beyond 200 minutes within weeks of completing the move.
We covered Nwaneri’s Champions League opportunity against Villarreal after he was introduced during the first half.
That means his early Dortmund record now stands at four competitive appearances, three Bundesliga outings, two league starts and meaningful Champions League exposure.
The goals and assists have not arrived yet.
The minutes certainly have.
What Nwaneri’s Dortmund numbers mean for Arsenal
Nwaneri’s early spell should not be judged purely by direct goal contributions.
Arsenal’s primary reason for approving the loan was development.
Dortmund confirmed the agreement runs for the 2026/27 season, while reports surrounding the deal established that there is no option to buy.
Arsenal therefore retain control over a player they still view as part of their long-term plans.
For now, the most encouraging statistic may simply be 185 Bundesliga minutes in three matches.
Nwaneri has gone from competing for occasional opportunities in north London to starting consecutive league games for a Dortmund side that entered the international break top of the Bundesliga.
His first goal contribution should eventually become the next marker.
But Arsenal already have evidence that the central purpose of the loan is being fulfilled.
Nwaneri is playing.
