Francis Jeffers’ regret over leaving Everton for Arsenal too early offers a timely reminder of the risks facing elite young players trying to accelerate their careers.

Jeffers arrived at Highbury for £8million in 2001 after emerging as one of England’s brightest young forwards, but managed only eight goals in 39 Arsenal appearances.

In comments revisited by Football.London ahead of Arsenal’s Carabao Cup tie with Ipswich, Jeffers admitted he left Everton “too soon” and struggled after moving from regular football into a squad containing Thierry Henry and Dennis Bergkamp.
