Premier League admit VAR mistake in Arsenal win over Aston Villa

The Premier League have reportedly admitted VAR made an incorrect decision during Arsenal’s recent victory over Aston Villa.

The Gunners secured an important win against Unai Emery’s side before following it with Sunday’s 2-1 victory over Chelsea at the Emirates Stadium.

However, one refereeing decision from the Villa match has remained under scrutiny.

Arsenal Insider reports that the Premier League have now accepted VAR made a mistake during the game.

It comes at a time when refereeing and video-assistant decisions continue to attract significant attention during the opening weeks of the new Premier League season.

Arsenal continue winning despite VAR controversy

The admission does not alter the result, but it adds another talking point to what was already an important afternoon for Mikel Arteta’s side.

Arsenal were forced to work hard against Villa before Bukayo Saka proved decisive, while Riccardo Calafiori was among the standout performers.

Our Arsenal player ratings from the Aston Villa win highlighted the individuals who helped Arteta’s side come through the contest.

The Gunners have since built on that victory by beating Chelsea, maintaining an excellent start to their Premier League title defence.

Arteta’s attention has now moved to Europe, with Arsenal facing Napoli in their Champions League opener on Wednesday night.

The VAR admission nevertheless provides further scrutiny of the officiating from the Villa match and will do little to quiet the wider debate around consistency.

For Arsenal, the most important point remains that they came away with the victory.

But confirmation that an intervention was handled incorrectly will inevitably leave supporters questioning how differently the game could have developed had the decision gone the other way.
