Arsenal are exploring a deadline-day move for Lyon winger Malick Fofana after the 21-year-old held talks with Mikel Arteta over a potential switch to the Emirates Stadium.
The Premier League champions have made contact over the Belgium international as they consider one final attacking addition before Tuesday night’s transfer deadline.
Fofana is understood to be interested in joining Arsenal, while Lyon are open to negotiations at around €40million (£34m). Reports in France say an agreement on personal terms should not present a significant obstacle if the two clubs can settle on a fee.
Arsenal consider Fofana after Martinelli exit
The late move comes as Arsenal reshape Arteta’s attacking options.
Gabriel Martinelli is heading to Al Hilal after Arsenal agreed a package worth more than €65m for the Brazilian winger, while Gabriel Jesus is also closing in on a permanent move to Barcelona.
Arsenal remain interested in Julian Alvarez and have not abandoned their attempt to convince the Atletico Madrid forward to return to England. Read Arsenal reported on Sunday that Arteta had made a personal push to persuade Alvarez, but his preference for Barcelona remains a significant obstacle.
Fofana now represents a more attainable alternative.
The Independent reports that Arsenal’s interest in the winger is longstanding and that Lyon’s failure to qualify for the Champions League has created an opportunity for a late deal. Fofana has already spoken with Arteta as Arsenal weigh up whether to proceed before the window shuts.
The Belgian has scored 19 goals in 83 appearances for Lyon since arriving from Gent and has started the new campaign with two goals in six matches.
There is not yet confirmation that Arsenal have agreed a fee, and the club could still decide against another attacking addition.
However, with Martinelli leaving and time running out, Fofana has suddenly become one of the most significant names to watch on Arsenal’s deadline day.
