Arsenal have agreed a deal to send Ethan Nwaneri on loan to Borussia Dortmund, handing the 19-year-old another opportunity to secure regular first-team football away from the Emirates Stadium.
The agreement represents significant deadline-day progression after Dortmund stepped up their interest overnight.
Jacob Steinberg reports for The Guardian that Borussia Dortmund have agreed a deal with Arsenal for Nwaneri, who has struggled to force his way into Mikel Arteta‘s team.
Arsenal agree Ethan Nwaneri Dortmund loan
The move comes after Nwaneri was left out of Arsenal’s squad for Monday night’s 1-0 victory over Aston Villa.
His prospects of regular minutes have become increasingly difficult following Arsenal’s summer recruitment, with Arteta now possessing significant competition across midfield and the attacking positions.
Read Arsenal reported in August that Nwaneri was heading towards an Arsenal exit as Dortmund and AC Milan circled.
That situation has now moved considerably further.
Sky Germany reports that Arsenal and Dortmund negotiated late into the night over the teenager and that Nwaneri wants the move. German reports suggest the deal is expected to be a straight loan without an option to buy, with Dortmund paying a loan fee and covering his salary.
That structure would make sense for Arsenal.
Nwaneri remains one of Hale End’s highest-rated graduates and is still under long-term contract, meaning a temporary move allows him to pursue minutes without Arsenal sacrificing control over his future.
Dortmund give Nwaneri another development chance
Nwaneri spent the second half of last season on loan at Marseille after struggling for opportunities in north London.
That move failed to provide the consistent game time Arsenal had hoped for, and Read Arsenal examined his return from Marseille and the decision facing Arteta this summer.
Dortmund now represents a different opportunity.
The Bundesliga club have a strong history of trusting young attacking players, while they will also compete in the Champions League this season.
Nwaneri showed again during pre-season that his ability remains unquestioned. He scored against Dortmund themselves during Arsenal’s 3-2 Emirates Cup defeat last month, with Read Arsenal analysing the fresh selection decision he gave Arteta.
Regular competitive minutes are now the priority.
Nwaneri could face Arsenal in Champions League
There is also an intriguing consequence of the move.
Arsenal have been drawn to face Borussia Dortmund at the Emirates Stadium in the Champions League league phase on 24 November. UEFA’s official fixture list confirms the meeting.
Nwaneri could therefore potentially return to north London as an opposition player only months after leaving on loan.
talkSPORT reports UEFA rules prevent clubs from enforcing domestic-style clauses that stop loanees facing their parent club in European competition, leaving Nwaneri available to play against Arsenal if selected.
That would add another layer to an already fascinating Champions League fixture.
Nwaneri exit opens another Arsenal squad place
The timing is notable because Arsenal are still assessing attacking additions before tonight’s 11pm deadline.
Arteta’s side are exploring a move for Lyon winger Malick Fofana while continuing to monitor the situation around Julian Alvarez. The Guardian reports Arsenal are still looking for attacking reinforcements despite sanctioning Nwaneri’s departure.
Nwaneri’s move therefore appears to be primarily about his development rather than Arsenal simply reducing numbers.
At 19, another season spent on the fringes would do little for his progression.
A successful year in Dortmund could leave Arsenal with a more experienced player ready to challenge properly for a first-team role next summer.
For now, though, another major piece of Arsenal’s deadline-day business is moving towards completion.
