Kai Havertz has given Arsenal a 1-0 lead against Coventry City with a clinical finish in the Premier League champions’ opening game of the season.
Mikel Arteta made the significant decision to start Havertz ahead of £63million striker Viktor Gyokeres at the Emirates Stadium.
It has already paid off.
Riccardo Calafiori capitalised on a loose ball down Arsenal’s left before sending a dangerous delivery into the Coventry penalty area.
Havertz guided the ball into the far corner to break the deadlock and give Arsenal the advantage.
Havertz rewards major Arsenal selection decision
The goal continues an excellent start to the season for the Germany international.
Havertz also found the net during Arsenal’s 3-0 Community Shield victory over Manchester City, strengthening his claim to remain Arteta’s first-choice striker.
ReadArsenal highlighted before kick-off that Arteta had again selected Havertz ahead of Gyokeres.
The decision was particularly significant after ReadArsenal examined the growing battle between Havertz and Gyokeres for Arsenal’s No.9 role.
Havertz has now provided Arteta with another compelling reason to keep faith with him.
Arsenal had gradually increased the pressure on Coventry before the opener, with Christos Tzolis and Bukayo Saka both threatening from wide areas.
Havertz supplied the decisive touch.
