Arsenal owners Stan and Josh Kroenke have made clear that last season’s Premier League triumph will not be treated as the end point, setting a new target of sustained success as Mikel Arteta’s side begin their title defence.
The Gunners host Coventry City at the Emirates Stadium on Friday night in their first league fixture since ending a 22-year wait to become champions of England.
Ahead of the game, Arsenal published a message from their co-chairs outlining what comes next.
“Now the goal is to win more trophies,” the Kroenkes said, while acknowledging that sustained success represents one of sport’s greatest challenges.
They added that work is continuing across the club to make that happen.
Kroenke raises Arsenal expectations after Premier League title
Arsenal are no longer trying to prove they can challenge the Premier League’s elite. They are now defending the trophy.
That shift is already reflected in the club’s decisions.
ReadArsenal reported on Friday morning that Mikel Arteta is expected to sign a new three-year contract, potentially extending his tenure towards a decade in north London.
The club have also continued strengthening his squad.
Ezri Konsa completed a move from Aston Villa worth up to £55m on Friday morning, adding another established England international to Arteta’s defensive options.
Further attacking recruitment is also still being explored before the transfer window closes.
The ownership message therefore carries more weight than a routine pre-season statement.
Arsenal reached the target they spent years building towards when they lifted the Premier League trophy in May.
The Kroenkes are now publicly setting a different standard.
One title established Arsenal at the top of English football again.
The next challenge is making sure they stay there.
