Arsenal enter their Premier League title defence with something increasingly rare among England’s biggest clubs: stability.
Mikel Arteta begins his seventh season in charge while much of the division is adapting to significant change. A record nine Premier League clubs will start 2026/27 with a new permanent manager, including several sides expected to compete near the top of the table. Reuters’ new-season analysis highlights just how unusual Arsenal’s continuity has become.
Manchester City have replaced Pep Guardiola with Enzo Maresca. Liverpool begin life under Andoni Iraola, while Chelsea have appointed Xabi Alonso.
Arsenal, meanwhile, know exactly who they are.
Arsenal title defence starts with rare Arteta advantage
Arteta was appointed in December 2019 and is now the longest-serving current Premier League manager, according to the Premier League’s official profile.
That familiarity could become particularly valuable during the opening weeks.
New managers require time to establish training methods, tactical principles and relationships with players. Arsenal enter the campaign with an established structure, a title-winning core and a dressing room already familiar with Arteta’s demands.
There has been evolution rather than upheaval.
Bruno Guimaraes has arrived for £75million and Christos Tzolis adds another attacking option, but Arsenal have largely strengthened around the team that finished top last season rather than starting again. Reuters describes Arteta’s methods as tested and trusted, although it also warns that the champions must continue developing if opponents have begun finding their football predictable.
That is the balance Arsenal now have to strike.
Continuity provides an advantage only if it is accompanied by progression.
Rivals’ uncertainty gives Arsenal an opening
Manchester City remain the obvious threat, but replacing Guardiola brings uncertainty regardless of Maresca’s pedigree.
Liverpool and Chelsea face similar questions under new coaches, while managerial changes have also affected Newcastle United, Nottingham Forest, Bournemouth, Fulham and Crystal Palace.
Arsenal do not have to spend the first months discovering what their manager wants.
They instead have to improve what already works.
ReadArsenal previously examined Arsenal’s 2026/27 fixture list and found a relatively manageable opening period before a demanding run later in the year.
Arteta’s side begin their league campaign at home to newly promoted Coventry City on 21 August before travelling to Aston Villa and hosting Chelsea. ReadArsenal has also looked at how the shortened World Cup summer complicates preparation, particularly for players returning late.
Those issues prevent Arsenal from having a completely clean run at the new season.
But while rivals are introducing new ideas, coaches and structures, Arsenal begin from a position of certainty.
Winning consecutive Premier League titles remains enormously difficult. Arteta’s stability will not guarantee it.
It does, however, give the champions a head start that very few of their rivals currently possess.
