Jules Kounde Arsenal transfer interest has emerged at an intriguing point in Mikel Arteta’s search for another defender.
Ezri Konsa remains a leading target, but the Barcelona star could offer Arsenal an even more useful solution because of his ability to operate at both centre-back and right-back.
Arsenal need immediate cover following William Saliba’s back injury, while Jurrien Timber remains several weeks away from returning.
The question is therefore not simply who can replace Saliba. Arteta needs a defender who will retain an important role once his first-choice options are available again.
Jules Kounde Arsenal move fits Arteta’s search
SPORT reports, via GOAL, that Arsenal have shown serious interest in Kounde after being discouraged by Aston Villa’s valuation of Konsa.
That interest makes tactical sense.
Kounde originally established himself as a centre-back with Bordeaux and Sevilla, but Barcelona describe him as having developed into a complete right-back.
For Arsenal, that versatility is particularly valuable.
ReadArsenal recently analysed why Arteta’s centre-back search goes beyond simply replacing Saliba. Arsenal have numbers defensively, but fewer senior players who can immediately handle major minutes on the right side of Arteta’s back line.
Kounde could cover Saliba centrally before competing at right-back once the France international returns.
That would prevent Arsenal spending heavily on somebody whose opportunities could suddenly shrink when Saliba is fit.
Kounde could give Arsenal more flexibility than Konsa
Konsa remains an attractive option.
He knows the Premier League, is comfortable defending large spaces and can also move across to right-back when required. However, Aston Villa’s position makes the deal difficult.
talkSPORT reports that Arsenal have already had an offer of around £35million rejected, with Villa valuing Konsa at more than £60million.
Kounde would not necessarily be cheaper. His Barcelona contract runs until 2030, and the Spanish club would only consider a sufficiently attractive proposal.
The difference is how naturally he could fit several versions of Arsenal’s defence.
Timber has often moved inside from full-back, while Ben White can operate centrally when required. Kounde would give Arteta another defender capable of changing position without forcing the rest of the back line to be reshuffled.
That feels particularly relevant after Arsenal’s recent defensive problems.
ReadArsenal highlighted Saliba’s absence following the 3-2 defeat against Borussia Dortmund, when Arteta’s side again looked vulnerable defending space behind their press.
Konsa would provide proven Premier League security. Kounde potentially offers something broader.
If Arsenal are going to spend heavily on another defender, signing somebody who can remain central to Arteta’s plans even after Saliba and Timber return could represent the smarter long-term investment.
