Joachim Low slams Mesut Ozil over Germany retirement

Germany manager Joachim Low has revealed that he is “disappointed” with Arsenal midfielder Mesut Ozil for not contacting him before deciding to retire from international football.

The playmaker was the subject of plenty of criticism for his poor performances during the World Cup this summer in Russia as Germany were dumped out of the group stages.

However, as reported on the Evening Standard, Ozil was also slammed for posing for photos with the Turkish president prior to the tournament.

The midfielder then released a statement where he hit out at the German Federation, who he believes employ people with racially discriminative backgrounds.

Low has not spoken to Ozil and said:

There was never any form of racism in the Germany team. His agent called me and informed about his retirement.

Mesut did not call me, not to this very day. I tried to reach him several times in the past two weeks, via text message, via phone. Mesut has decided to take this path. I must accept it.

One day, we’ll have a conversation. I would have wished for him to inform me personally, and I was disappointed at first.

Ozil did not claim that there was racism within the Germany squad but he has taken the decision to retire, giving him the chance to focus on his club football for Arsenal.
