Arsenal have club-record bid for James Rodriguez rejected

Arsene Wenger has been handed a sizeable summer warchest to invest into his squad before the start of next season and the belief is he wants to spend the majority of his budget on two or three marquee additions to the side.

Journalist Jose Luis Sanchez of Spanish television show El Chiringuito claims that the Gunners lodged a huge bid to sign Real Madrid playmaker James Rodriguez this summer (h/t the Express).

The 25-year-old’s future at the Bernabeu remains uncertain having started just 13 La Liga games this past season for Madrid as they completed a league and Champions League double.

Madrid are believed to value the attacker at £69.8m and unfortunately for Arsenal, their bid has fallen just short of their price-tag and has been rejected.

Whether Arsenal go in again for Rodriguez remains to be seen but perhaps this is a sign regarding the futures of both Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez that the Gunners are lodging a huge, club-record bid for a player who operates in the same areas as both Ozil and Sanchez, who are tipped to leave the club in the near future.

Manchester United and Chelsea are also said to be interested in signing the Colombian attacker this summer.
