Arsenal have joined Newcastle United in the race to sign Eibar defender Florian Lejuene according to the Daily Star.

The Magpies have matched the defenders £8.75 million release clause and Rafa Benitez has offered to double the defender’s current wage but Arsene Wenger is looking to hijack the deal at the last minute.

Arsenal don’t have the usual advantage of offering players Champions League football at the Emirates after last season’s fifth-placed finish, but it seems Lejuene’s preferred move would be to London, with North London rivals Tottenham also rumoured to be interested.

Lejuene, 26, made 37 appearances for Eibar last season as they finished 10th in La Liga. The Frenchman can also operate as a holding midfield player but mainly plays as a centre back.

Arsene Wenger has admitted he has a ‘very heavy squad’ so may be looking to ship some players out before making additions to his side.
