Mesut Ozil willing to run down his Arsenal contract

Arsenal could be hit twice as hard this summer if Mesut Ozil follows in Alex Sanchez’s footsteps and looks to secure a move away from the Emirates this summer.

The German playmaker hasn’t had his best season for the Gunners but put in one of his best performances of the season during the FA Cup final win over Chelsea last week.

With just one year left to run on his Arsenal contract, Ozil is preparing to run down his contract and leave on a free transfer next summer according to the Times.

Arsenal’s £42m record signing turns 29 in the Autumn and wants to shift his focus to winning as many trophies over the remainder of his career and he, along with Sanchez, are worried about the Gunners’ competitiveness domestically and in Europe, a fear that has only been exacerbated following the club’s failure to qualify for next season’s Champions League.

Ozil has been offered fresh terms worth £280,000-a-week, more than double what any other player is currently earning at the club, but he is reluctant to sign.

There isn’t a great deal of interest in Ozil this summer which has prompted the German to bide his time and reassess his situation in the coming months as he prepares to make his next move.

It’s said that Arsenal would be willing to cash-in on Ozil this summer if it meant they could keep Sanchez but it doesn’t appear likely that they’ll find a buyer anytime soon, or be able to persuade the Chilean attacker to stay at the club regardless.

Arsenal have an opportunity to convince Ozil to stay if they can become a competitive force in the Premier League, maybe win another domestic cup and illustrate that they are once again one of the strongest teams in the division, otherwise he’ll be left with no option and leave when his contract expires next year.
