Arsenal defender and club captain Per Mertesacker has admitted that he is already considering the possibility of leaving the club in the summer when his contract expires.

The German is no longer first-choice at the club with Laurent Koscielny and his fellow international Shkodran Mustafi now clearly the best two defenders at the club and at age 32, he’ll need to decide whether he is happy being a back up or if he wants regular first team football.

Of course, he may not even have a choice as Arsenal may simply choose to let him leave.

He told Jack Austin of The Independent:

I am a person who likes to create options for himself. Of course, I ask myself what would make sense if things were to end at Arsenal. Where can I be of any help? What do I want? Could I maybe return to Germany? I look at the perspectives for me and my family, and I think that I’ll intensify those thoughts from January on. That’s also the time when you can listen to other things when your contract is expiring.

As Mertesacker said, he can begin speaking to other clubs in January and it looks like his hometown club, Hannover, would be interested in bringing him back to Germany.

At the moment, Hannover are in the 2. Bundesliga, the second division of German football, although they are tipped to gain promotion.

If they do manage to get themselves back into the Bundesliga, it looks like Mertesacker could decide to move back home to finish his playing career.
