Napoli chairman Aurelio De Laurentiis says that Arsenal made a bid for striker Gonzalo Higuain in the summer but he rejected it as it was too low.

The Argentine international ended up moving to Juventus for a mammoth €90 million and has gotten off to a great start, scoring seven goals in nine games so far this season.

According to De Laurentiis, both Arsenal and Atletico Madrid made offers to sign the 28-year-old but neither were close to his €90 million buy out clause so Napoli simply rejected them.

He told the London Evening Standard:

We received a request from Arsenal. Personally, I also received a request from Atletico Madrid but they didn’t put enough money on the table.

Napoli wanted to keep Higuain at the club and even offered him a new contract and a bigger salary than he currently picks up at Juve, but they were powerless to prevent him from leaving when the Turin-based side met his buy out clause.

Arsenal want on to sign Lucas Perez instead but it’s fair to say that most fans would have preferred them to sign Higuain!
