Jens Lehmann: Arsenal have thrown away the title

Former Arsenal goalkeeper, Jens Lehmann believes Arsenal should’ve won the league this year.

After suffering another disappointing result at the weekend -a 1-1 draw with Crystal Palace- Arsenal now seem resigned to contend for only a top four spot. The North London club were top of the table at the turn of the year, but have since collapsed. Since then, Leicester City, Tottenham Hotspur and most recently, Manchester City, have all surpassed Arsenal in the table.

What makes this season even more bittersweet is the inconsistent performances from usual title contenders, Manchester City and Chelsea. Due to Arsenal’s early dominance, Lehmann believes his former team should have won the title this year.

Of course they’ve thrown it away. It’s a fact. The table is completely different to how it was on January 1. I think this time it’s a little bit more disappointing than before because everybody thought Leicester could be caught at the end of the season.

They can but unfortunately by Spurs and not by Arsenal. If you’re an Arsenal supporter there have been better times.Of course I’m a little bit sad. It’s Arsenal and the Arsenal when I played there was probably a little bit different to the one it is now.

Arsenal are now only four points ahead of Manchester United in fifth, a position which Lehmann believes is not solely down to the defence, a defence which has conceded the most goals out of the top five in the Premier League.

From my experience defending is the responsibility of the whole team in modern football, Arsenal can’t say ‘oh the defence,’ you need to have the right balance and the right positioning on the pitch. You can’t really blame the striker for not scoring when he doesn’t get any deliveries. Probably the offensive guys don’t track back really hard.

Moreover, the ex-Arsenal ‘keeper, did not support the claims that the manager, Arsene Wenger is not to blame for the team’s poor season.

I only know that Arsene Wenger was the most successful manager in world football at buying and selling. Has he lost that? Well Cech was a good buy and if it was so easy than everyone could do it.

You can’t get me into any criticism of Wenger. I’m not on the Arsenal board so can’t comment on his future. I’d prefer to see them winning the league as would everyone who’s involved with Arsenal.

Whatever Arsenal’s problems have been, the club need to finish the season well to secure a top four, if not top three position.
