Monreal explains why he wanted contract extension

Arsenal defender Nacho Monreal has explained the reason behind wanting to sign a new contract extension with the club.

The Spaniard agreed a new deal with the Gunners on Tuesday morning amid weeks of speculation a contract was close to being agreed.

Having become arguably Arsenal’s most reliable and consistent player, the 29-year-old has received an abundance of plaudits from teammates, pundits and supporters.

The former Malaga defender’s contract extension will run until 2019.

Monreal, however, admitted to Arsenal’s official website, that he is keen to stay at the club for many years.

I’m really happy because my intention was to keep playing for Arsenal.

I have a good relationship with my team-mates and we keep improving year after year. I wanted to stay here and I could extend my contract. I would like to play here for many more years.

The trust of the Arsenal fans is really important for us because they are helping us in every moment as we are fighting to win the Premier League.

I met the boss three years ago and I have a really good relationship with him and I’m really happy with him. For these reasons I extended my contract.

I’m very happy with my performances this season

At the beginning it was difficult because I was a new signing and I didn’t speak English.

But now I feel more comfortable with my team-mates and with everything in general so that has helped me to play better because I have more confidence in myself.

The Spanish left-back has featured in all 22 of Arsenal’s league fixtures this season, starting in 21 of them and has become a key part of a solid defence.

Monreal will play a key role in Arsenal’s title ambitions this campaign, with the north London side facing their best chance to win the Premier League for over 10 years – currently leading the pack after 22 games.
