Arsenal’s defensive returns give Arteta fresh Leeds options after Brighton warning

Arsenal’s returning defenders could give Mikel Arteta more than cover against Leeds United. Ben White, Cristhian Mosquera and Piero Hincapie offer different ways to organise a back line seeking a response to the 3-0 defeat at Brighton.

All three have returned to training, according to football.london’s report, syndicated by AOL.

That does not confirm their readiness to start on Saturday. It does give Arteta potential choices as he prepares for Leeds’ visit, with kick-off at 12.30pm at the Emirates Stadium.

The important question is which combination would make Arsenal function better.

Ben White could change the balance around Saka

White’s potential return matters on both sides of the ball.

At right-back, he can provide an overlapping option that gives Bukayo Saka another route when opponents crowd the winger. That supporting run can help Saka receive inside or create room for a return pass.

The value depends on timing. Sending the full-back forward on every attack would leave Arsenal exposed when possession changes.

Arteta needs the right-back, right-sided centre-back and nearest midfielder to share those responsibilities. One player can advance while another protects the space behind.

If White is ready, he offers a familiar partnership on that flank. His availability would also give Arteta more freedom over where and when to use Jurrien Timber.

Mosquera offers another central option

Mosquera’s return could strengthen competition at centre-back and reduce the need to move other defenders away from their preferred roles.

However, being available should not automatically put him ahead of players who have maintained match rhythm.

Centre-back partnerships depend on shared decisions: when to step towards a forward, when to hold the line and who covers a ball played behind the defence.

Those details become particularly important when Arsenal push players forward at home. A defender stepping out needs support behind him and pressure on the opponent delivering the pass.

Mosquera gives Arteta another option to assess through the week. The decision should depend on his readiness and the partnership Arsenal want, rather than a desire to make changes simply because Brighton went badly.

Hincapie gives Arsenal flexibility on the left

Hincapie can offer a different balance through his ability to play centrally or at left-back.

One possible use would be to keep the left-back closer to the centre-backs while the opposite full-back advances. That could leave Arsenal better positioned to defend a turnover without asking both flanks to operate identically.

It would also affect the attacking players ahead of him. A more restrained left-back places greater responsibility on the winger and midfield to supply width, movement and passing options.

That is a trade-off Arteta should assess, rather than an automatic improvement. Defensive security matters, but Arsenal must still create enough opportunities to beat Leeds.

What should Arteta do against Leeds?

Our preference would be to preserve a settled central partnership where possible and make targeted changes around it.

The return of three defenders should help Arteta choose players for specific jobs. It need not trigger three immediate changes.

Training involvement, match sharpness and the ability to complete demanding minutes are separate considerations. A place on the bench could still make a returning player useful, particularly if Arsenal need to protect a lead or replace a tiring defender.

There is also the run of fixtures after the international break to consider. Leeds is the first test, but the squad will need dependable alternatives beyond Saturday.

Arsenal’s best response to Brighton would be a defence with clear responsibilities and enough support around it. White, Mosquera and Hincapie could help provide that, provided their returns are managed carefully.
