Ipswich vs Arsenal H2H: Gunners dominate but cup warning remains

Arsenal head to Portman Road on Tuesday night with a commanding historical record against Ipswich Town.

The two clubs have met 56 times, with Arsenal winning 30 matches, Ipswich winning 16 and the remaining 10 ending in draws.

Recent history is even more favourable for Mikel Arteta’s side.

Arsenal have won four of the previous five meetings and cruised to a 4-0 Premier League victory on their most recent visit to Portman Road in April 2025.

But the history books also contain one warning for a heavily rotated Arsenal team.

Ipswich’s most recent victory over the Gunners came in this competition — and at this ground.

Supporters preparing for Tuesday can find the full broadcast details in ReadArsenal’s Ipswich vs Arsenal TV and live-stream guide.

Ipswich vs Arsenal head-to-head record

The overall record currently stands at:

Matches: 56
Arsenal wins: 30
Ipswich wins: 16
Draws: 10
Arsenal goals: 88
Ipswich goals: 58

That means Arsenal have won more than half of all competitive meetings between the clubs.

The Gunners have also dominated the fixture in the modern era.

Last five Ipswich vs Arsenal meetings

20 April 2025: Ipswich 0-4 Arsenal
27 December 2024: Arsenal 1-0 Ipswich
25 January 2011: Arsenal 3-0 Ipswich
12 January 2011: Ipswich 1-0 Arsenal
21 April 2002: Arsenal 2-0 Ipswich

Arsenal therefore have four wins from the last five, scoring 10 goals and conceding just once.

The most recent meeting at Portman Road was particularly one-sided.

Leandro Trossard scored twice in Arsenal’s 4-0 victory in April 2025, with Gabriel Martinelli and Ethan Nwaneri also finding the net. Ipswich were reduced to 10 men during the first half after Leif Davis was sent off.

Ipswich have shocked Arsenal in this cup before

Tuesday’s fixture nevertheless has an interesting League Cup precedent.

Arsenal travelled to Portman Road for the first leg of the 2010/11 League Cup semi-final as overwhelming favourites.

Ipswich were then a Championship side.

But Tamas Priskin struck in the 78th minute to give the hosts a famous 1-0 victory over Arsenal.

Arsène Wenger’s side eventually recovered at the Emirates.

Nicklas Bendtner, Laurent Koscielny and Cesc Fàbregas scored as Arsenal won the second leg 3-0 and progressed 3-1 on aggregate.

Ipswich’s first-leg victory remains their most recent win against Arsenal.

That history is worth remembering ahead of Tuesday.

Arteta is expected to make substantial changes after Arsenal’s demanding run of matches, with ReadArsenal’s predicted Arsenal XI against Ipswich featuring several possible rotations.

The Gunners are also dealing with defensive fitness concerns, covered in our latest Arsenal injury news before Ipswich.

Arsenal’s historical record makes them clear favourites.

Portman Road’s cup history, however, provides a reminder of what can happen if they underestimate Ipswich.
