Sunderland vs Arsenal head-to-head record

The overall record currently stands at:

Arsenal wins: 64
Draws: 42
Sunderland wins: 50
Total meetings: 156

The rivalry stretches back to January 1893, when Sunderland beat Royal Arsenal 6-0 in the FA Cup.

Since then Arsenal have gone unbeaten in every meeting.

What happened last season?

Arsenal were frustrated on their most recent visit to the Stadium of Light.

The sides drew 2-2 in November 2025, with Sunderland striking in stoppage time after Arsenal had overturned a first-half deficit.

Dan Ballard put Sunderland ahead before Bukayo Saka equalised and Leandro Trossard gave Arsenal the lead.

Brian Brobbey then scored in the 94th minute to deny Arteta’s side all three points.

Trossard’s strike was later included among ReadArsenal’s best Arsenal goals of the 2025/26 season.

Arsenal responded emphatically in the reverse fixture.

The Gunners won 3-0 at Emirates Stadium in February 2026, meaning Sunderland managed only one point from the two league meetings last season. The two results are also the clubs’ most recent competitive encounters.

Before Sunderland’s return to the Premier League, Arsenal had won the previous three meetings, including a 5-1 Carabao Cup victory in 2021 and a 4-1 league win at the Stadium of Light in 2016.

Saturday therefore offers Arsenal the chance to extend a 14-match unbeaten run against the Black Cats.
