Arsenal travel to Napoli with an increasingly strong record against Italian opposition, having won seven of their last 10 European matches against Serie A clubs.
Mikel Arteta’s side begin their 2026/27 Champions League campaign at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona on Wednesday night.
Naples has not always been a happy destination for Arsenal, but the Gunners’ wider record in Italy has improved considerably over recent seasons.
UEFA’s official matchday statistics show Arsenal have won seven of their last 10 matches against Italian clubs, drawing one and losing two.
Arsenal’s recent away record in Italy
Arsenal have won three of their last five European away matches against Italian opposition, with one draw and one defeat.
That run includes several very different European nights.
In March 2018, Arsenal produced one of their best away performances of the late Arsene Wenger era by beating AC Milan 2-0 at San Siro in the Europa League.
A year later came the most relevant result for Wednesday’s fixture.
Arsenal travelled to Naples protecting a 2-0 Europa League quarter-final advantage and won 1-0 after Alexandre Lacazette’s first-half free-kick.
Our complete Napoli vs Arsenal head-to-head record looks at all four previous meetings between the two clubs.
Arsenal’s return to Italy in the Champions League in September 2024 resulted in a goalless draw with Atalanta.
They then suffered their only defeat across the current five-game Italian away sample, losing 1-0 against Inter Milan at San Siro later that season.
That match proved frustrating for Arteta’s side.
Arsenal attempted 20 shots but failed to score, while Hakan Calhanoglu’s first-half penalty separated the teams.
The response when Arsenal returned to Inter last season could hardly have been more convincing.
Inter win shows Arsenal’s European progress
Arsenal beat Inter 3-1 at San Siro during the 2025/26 Champions League league phase.
UEFA identifies that victory as the result which took Arsenal to three wins from their last five away fixtures against Italian teams.
It was also part of a remarkable European campaign.
Arteta’s team won all eight league-phase matches before progressing through the knockout rounds and eventually reaching the Champions League final.
Arsenal are now unbeaten on Matchday One across their last nine European campaigns, winning seven and drawing two. Their most recent opening-round European defeat came against Dinamo Zagreb in 2015/16.
Those numbers provide plenty of encouragement before another difficult Italian assignment.
Arsenal have won three of four against Napoli
The head-to-head record is also in Arsenal’s favour.
The Gunners have beaten Napoli three times in four competitive meetings.
Arsenal won 2-0 at home in both 2013 and 2019 before their 1-0 victory in Naples six years later.
Napoli’s only victory came in December 2013, when they defeated Arsenal 2-0 in the Champions League group stage.
Arteta was actually playing that night and was sent off during the second half.
He now returns as Arsenal manager with a considerably stronger recent record in Italy behind him.
Our updated Arsenal predicted XI against Napoli assesses the selection decisions facing Arteta, while the Napoli vs Arsenal TV guide contains the confirmed UK broadcast information.
History will not decide Wednesday’s result.
But Arsenal’s recent numbers against Italian opposition are much healthier than they once were, and another victory in Naples would make it four wins from their last six European visits to Italy.
