Mikel Arteta is expected to sign a new three-year Arsenal contract as the Premier League champions move to secure the manager who ended their 22-year wait for the title.

Arteta has entered the final 12 months of his existing agreement, but there has been little concern inside Arsenal that the Spaniard could leave.

Chief executive Richard Garlick said earlier this week that Arteta’s future would be resolved “very shortly”, with both sides keen to continue working together.

Now The Times reports that Arteta is expected to sign a new three-year deal, potentially taking his reign in north London towards a full decade.

Mikel Arteta Arsenal contract moves closer after title win

Arteta took charge in December 2019 and has overseen Arsenal’s transformation from a side outside the Champions League places into Premier League champions.

The 44-year-old also led Arsenal to last season’s Champions League final before finally ending the club’s long wait for a league title.

His current contract was signed in September 2024.

ReadArsenal reported in June that negotiations over another Arteta contract were making significant progress, with confidence already growing that an agreement would eventually be reached.

There is now greater clarity over the proposed length.

Garlick strengthened that position this week when he said it was only a matter of time before Arsenal put their shared commitment into a new contract.

Arteta has also publicly stressed that he remains extremely happy at the club.

The timing is significant as Arsenal begin their first Premier League title defence since 2004 against Coventry City on Friday night.

Rather than entering the campaign with uncertainty around the manager’s future, Arsenal appear increasingly close to securing the figure who has led their recent revival.

A new three-year agreement could also take Arteta close to ten years in charge if he sees it through.

For a club now attempting to turn one Premier League triumph into a sustained period of success, Arsenal appear ready to ensure the manager remains at the centre of that project.
