Earlier this week, Arsenal showed their title-winning credentials with a 2-1 victory over Manchester City. On Boxing Day, Arsenal were given a great opportunity to climb to the top of the Premier League. Arsenal, however, once again faltered and were conclusively beaten 4-0 by Southampton. Such was Arsenal’s capitulation, that it led to club legend, Ian Wright, as per the Mirror, to criticise Arsenal’s lacklustre performance.
Wright hit out at the poor mentality in the Gunners’ dressing room. Wright argued that they might have salvaged a draw, if they’d had any big characters in the dressing room.
I think the worst Arsenal should have left there with is a draw. My mistake at half-time was thinking that I was in that dressing room. I would go in that dressing room and then be coming out and really try to prove something. My mistake is thinking that those players think like I do.

Arsenal played a Southampton side that was out of form and low on confidence. It was Arsenal, however, who played like the side who had lost five of their last six games. Arsenal never got into the game, and as a result, were 1-0 down at half time. The second half was even worse, as the Gunners conceded a further three goals.
With Leicester losing, Arsenal missed the chance to jump ahead of them to go top, and now also only sit a point ahead of City.

Leicester [are having an] unbelievable season, no one is expecting them to be where they are, they are doing it but they lost [against Liverpool] so we have to see how they go.
Manchester City, you know they are going to come. Arsenal had to get something out of this game because it was a great opportunity for them and the worse you can do is draw that game.
They’ve lost it and it could have been by five or six. It’s very disappointing for Arsenal fans. I’m very disappointed and I’m angry because it’s a great opportunity missed.
