Former West Ham, Chelsea and Manchester City midfielder Frank Lampard thinks that Aaron Ramsey needs to adapt his game and do more defensive work to help Arsenal continue to battle for the Premier League title.

Speaking on Sky Sports Monday Night Football, Lampard said that the Welshman must adapt and embrace a more defensive role.

The 24-year-old got on the scoresheet in the recent 2-0 win over bottom club Aston Villa, but Lampard said with players like German star Mesut Ozil playing so well behind the striker, Ramsey must learn to do more work to help his defenders, as he looks reluctant to do that work.

With Ozil playing so well he knows he’s not going to get that No.10 role, so he’ll have to drop deeper. At the moment, he doesn’t yet have the ability to play in midfield two. I love him as a player, [he’s] very bright and very clever but you can see by the way he’s running back, he doesn’t really want to do it.

The former England international also said that he thinks the Welshman is not suited to playing in a midfield duo, which could be an issue seeing as the Gunners have a mounting list of centre-midfielders who are still not fit enough for first team action.

At the moment he doesn’t yet have the ability to play in midfield two.
