Arsenal 3-0 Man City: Gunners lift Community Shield in statement win

Arsenal produced a commanding 3-0 victory over Manchester City to lift the Community Shield and make an emphatic statement before their Premier League title defence begins.

Mikel Arteta’s side took just 24 seconds to open the scoring at the Principality Stadium, with Riccardo Calafiori finishing Arsenal’s first attack of the afternoon after excellent work from Myles Lewis-Skelly.

It set the tone for a dominant display.

Kai Havertz doubled Arsenal’s advantage before half-time after Christos Tzolis intelligently created the opening, before captain Martin Odegaard added a superb third shortly after the restart. The Guardian’s live report detailed Arsenal’s dominant afternoon in Cardiff.

Arsenal 3-0 Man City as Calafiori sparks dream start

City barely had time to settle before Arsenal went ahead.

Lewis-Skelly helped create the opening and Calafiori made no mistake, scoring inside the first half-minute to give Arteta’s side the perfect start.

Arsenal continued to carry the greater threat and made it 2-0 through Havertz after 28 minutes.

Tzolis was instrumental. The summer signing showed excellent awareness to direct the ball into Havertz’s path, allowing the German to finish from close range.

It continued an encouraging start to Tzolis’ Arsenal career following his £34million summer arrival.

ReadArsenal had highlighted the major selection decisions facing Arteta before kick-off, but his side quickly justified their manager’s approach.

Odegaard puts Community Shield beyond Man City

Any hopes City had of mounting a second-half comeback disappeared almost immediately after the interval.

Odegaard collected possession inside the penalty area, escaped Josko Gvardiol and showed outstanding composure to beat Gianluigi Donnarumma before finishing into the empty net.

At 3-0, Arsenal were firmly in control.

City did create openings as the match progressed, but Raya ensured Arsenal preserved their clean sheet with saves from Phil Foden and Antoine Semenyo.

The result was particularly encouraging given Arsenal’s disrupted preparation.

Bukayo Saka, Declan Rice and Martin Zubimendi only recently returned after extended post-World Cup breaks, while William Saliba and Jurrien Timber remain unavailable.

ReadArsenal reported before the game that Saka and Rice had returned to contention, giving Arteta more senior options for the first competitive fixture of the campaign.

Arsenal send early warning before Premier League title defence

The Community Shield will not define Arsenal’s season, but the manner of this victory is difficult to ignore.

Arteta’s champions were aggressive from the opening seconds, clinical when opportunities arrived and organised enough to prevent City from finding a route back into the contest.

There were positive signs from established players and new arrivals alike.

Tzolis made a decisive contribution, while Arsenal’s midfield repeatedly gave Arteta the control he wanted against a City side beginning a new era under Enzo Maresca.

Arsenal’s predicted XI before the game focused heavily on the difficult decisions created by Arsenal’s shortened pre-season.

Those concerns looked considerably less significant by full-time.

Calafiori started the afternoon with a goal inside 24 seconds. Havertz strengthened Arsenal’s grip before Odegaard finished the job.

Arsenal leave Cardiff with another piece of silverware and, perhaps more importantly, an early indication that winning the Premier League has done little to reduce their appetite for more.
