Arsenal 1-1 Como: Lewis-Skelly scores as Gunners win 4-3 shootout

Arsenal ended pre-season with a 1-1 draw against Como before winning a pre-arranged penalty shootout 4-3 at the Emirates Stadium.

Myles Lewis-Skelly opened the scoring for Mikel Arteta’s side after 33 minutes, taking advantage of a mistake in the Como defence before finding the bottom corner.

The lead did not last until half-time. Martin Baturina equalised in the 43rd minute with a well-taken finish to ensure the sides went into the break level. Sky Sports confirmed the two first-half goals as Arsenal completed their final friendly before Sunday’s Community Shield against Manchester City.

Arsenal 1-1 Como after Lewis-Skelly makes his mark

Lewis-Skelly’s goal arrived at an interesting time after another week of uncertainty surrounding his Arsenal future.

Chelsea and Manchester United have both been linked with the academy graduate, although ReadArsenal reported earlier on Wednesday that both clubs had decided against pursuing a move.

The 19-year-old responded on the pitch by giving Arsenal the lead and producing another reminder of his value to Arteta.

Bruno Guimaraes also featured as the £75million summer signing made his first Arsenal appearance following his move from Newcastle United.

Neither side found another breakthrough after Baturina’s equaliser, meaning the 90-minute friendly officially finished 1-1.

A penalty shootout had already been arranged regardless of the result, giving both teams an opportunity to practise from the spot.

Raya stars as Arsenal win shootout

Arsenal eventually won the shootout 4-3.

David Raya saved efforts from Josip Smolcic and Alvaro Morata, while Martin Odegaard, Kai Havertz and Guimaraes were among the Arsenal players to convert. Noni Madueke hit the woodwork with his effort.

That left Christos Tzolis with the opportunity to win it, and the winger converted to complete the 4-3 shootout victory.

Arsenal now turn their attention to competitive football.

Arteta’s side face Manchester City in the Community Shield on Sunday, and the Como game provided one final opportunity to assess his squad before the new campaign begins.
