Arsenal monitoring Burnley’s James Tarkowski

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger is keeping a close eye on the progression of Burnley defender James Tarkowski as the Gunners look to sign a new centre back in the January transfer window, according to a report on The Times.

The Burnley centre-back has been hugely impressive so far this season and is one of the key reasons as to why the Clarets are doing so well in the Premier League.

Many pundits have called on England manager Gareth Southgate to reward Tarkowski with a national team call-up but the defender has kept his feet on the ground and continued to work hard for his club.

Arsenal know that Per Mertesacker will retire at the end of this season and are looking for an adequate replacement. Wenger believes that Tarkowski could be the man to sign to improve his defensive unit.

The 25-year-old is happy at Burnley and the club are reluctant to sell him in January. However, if Arsenal make a move for him in the summer then Burnley may be open to negotiations.

The Clarets don’t want to lose a key player halfway through the season and if the offer is right in the summer, then they may offload the Englishman.

The Gunners could face competition from table topping Manchester City, who could lure the defender to the Etihad by promising UEFA Champions League football, something which Arsenal may not have.
