Wenger – Sunday not season defining

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has argued that while Sunday afternoon’s game against Leicester City holds importance, it is not ‘decisive’.

The north London side welcome the visit of the Barclays Premier League table toppers on Sunday afternoon, knowing that anything but a win could see them plunge further down the table, with a Leicester win leaving them eight points south of the top of the league.

Earlier in the week, former Gunner turned pundit and co-commentator Alan Smith claimed that Arsenal’s fixture against the Foxes could define their season. However, the experienced Frenchman, speaking to the media in his pre-match news conference on Friday, quashed such speculation.

We didn’t win for a while so of course for the belief, the pressure was a bit stronger and it was very important for us to win on Sunday, we did and I think we’re back to normal level.

How much [importance Sunday holds] I don’t know, but you don’t need to be a super mathematician to analyse that it is a very important game, maybe not a decisive one but it’s not far away from that.

There is still a long way to go, Leicester is in a strong position and they have silenced all doubters since the start from the season. In the last week they have become potential winners of the Premier League because of their positive results against Liverpool and Manchester City.

Arsenal face Leicester City on Sunday afternoon, while Tottenham Hotspur take on Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium, with wins for either side taking them above the Gunners, should Arsene Wenger’s side fail to pick up all three points at the Emirates Stadium.
