Wenger – Cech’s quick integration surprised me

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has praised goalkeeper Petr Cech for his quick integration into squad.

The 33-year-old joined the club from Chelsea in the summer for a fee believed to be in the region of £10m and has featured regularly in the first XI since, becoming a key component in Arsenal’s strong start to the campaign thus far.

Monday’s key 2-0 victory over Bournemouth was important for a number of reasons, one being that it moved the Gunners atop the Premier League table, the second that it meant Cech was finally able to break David James’ all-time Premier League clean sheet record.

The record previously stood at 169 but having kept Bournemouth away from putting the ball in the back of the net, Cech stole the record away from the ex-England international turned pundit.

I said many times that it is maybe the most underrated position in football and goalkeepers are more important than everybody thinks. When you look at his record it is absolutely fantastic, because considering the number of games he played and the number of games he had a clean sheet, that speaks for itself.

On top of that I must say I am surprised how quickly he integrated into our team. It looks like he has always played here for us… how quickly he became comfortable inside and important inside the team, is amazing.

Cech will look to continue the clean sheet record and increase the gap further when Arsenal take Newcastle United on this weekend.
