Wenger – We must focus on Premier League

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has claimed that his side must focus on the Premier League, amid a fantastic week for the Gunners.

The north London side beat Sunderland at the Emirates Stadium last Saturday, with the returning Aaron Ramsey proving himself more than useful in a central role, before travelling to Greece to face Olympiacos, knowing anything but victory would not be enough. The Gunners did just that and emphatically, with the Welshman once again putting in a top-notch performance.

Despite lauding the victory as one of his best considering the odds were against his side, Wenger admitted that Arsenal must now change their focus and think about the task of Aston Villa on Sunday, with the Gunners knowing a win would send them top of the division.

We wanted to stay in the Champions League. It looked very unlikely after our defeat to Olympiacos because we needed to beat Bayern, to win away at Olympiacos, which we had not done recently, so I think it is a fantastic performance that got us through in the end.

Now we need to focus again on the Premier League and we are in a strong position. We need to move from competition to another with the same level of performance and focus.

Discussing the Europa League, Wenger admitted that he doesn’t know if being in the second tier competition would have helped his side’s chances domestically.

I don’t know but we would have played as well in the competition and we would have gone for it. It is a difficult competition. You have Liverpool, Manchester United and Tottenham, so it would have been a little Premier League competition and we are happy to stay where we are.

Arsenal face Aston Villa at Villa Park on Sunday afternoon.
