Wenger – New Spurs & West Ham stadiums will challenge us

Speaking at his news conference ahead of the north London derby, Arsene Wenger spoke about the gap between Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur, and specifically if the disparity between the two clubs is starting to lessen.

On a financial level, we always had level power because when we had 37,000, 38,000 seater we were level. After we moved into the new stadium we had less financial resources than them because we had to pay our debts back. That was always the case. Now, maybe in the last 2 or 3 years we are in a stronger financial situation but that will not last because they build a new stadium as well.

Spurs have already started work building a new stadium, while another London-based club, West Ham, will move into the Olympic Stadium for the start of next season and Arsene Wenger thinks that both moves will present the Gunners with difficulties.

It is the biggest challenge we face. It will be purely down to the technical quality of work.

Both clubs will have the finances to compete with Arsenal, and as both are London-based, there is no real geographical advantage for the Gunners either.

In truth, it’s difficult to see players choosing to join Tottenham or West Ham over Arsenal, especially if they are likely to be starters in Wenger’s first team.

However, in terms of adding depth to a squad, a player might well choose to join Spurs or West Ham if they can offer a similar financial package than Arsenal can, as the player might feel there’ll be more opportunities to play at those two clubs.
