Wenger – I did not blame Chris Coleman

After a busy week for the Gunners and with plenty to look forward to in the near-future, Arsene Wenger discussed a number of topics at his news conference this week as his side prepare for the north London derby with Tottenham at the weekend.

One topic he touched upon was the response of Wales manager Chris Coleman, who spoke in the past few days about Wenger’s criticism of his team selections.

The Arsenal manager has apparently suggested that international football was to blame for Aaron Ramsey’s recent hamstring injury and was said to be upset that the midfielder played against Andorra after Wales had already clinched qualification for Euro 2016.

Coleman felt Wenger had taken a “cheap shot” at him, and suggested that the Arsenal manager should speak to him personally if he had a problem with his team selections.

When asked about his thoughts on the comments of the Welsh manager, Wenger said that he did not blame him.

I didn’t blame anybody. I just said that it would make common sense to not use Bale or Ramsey once they were qualified and bring them on 10 minutes to go. It would have helped the clubs and it is just an opinion.

I don’t believe there was anything spectacular or a desire to blame anybody.

I said as well in that press conference that I cannot call all the managers, I believe I did not blame him especially. I think we analyse the reasons why our players get injured and you always think that in a period like that, if a player can have one game less it is not bad.
